The Magic of Madeira
An article in Endless Vacation Magazine by Christine Ajudua
Recently we came on an article in the Endless Vacation Magazine made by Christine Ajudua. It’s an honor to be a part of it even more when the title is “The Magic of Madeira”.
“Not far away is Porto da Cruz, a tiny cobblestoned village whose black-sand Praia da Lagoa is known for its surf breaks. You can learn how to hang ten with Salty (Rua da Praia; 011-351-967-107-792; lessons, from $53), a just-launched water-sports school from seven-time Madeira surfing champion Belmiro Mendes; he’s even taught his pet dogs to ride the waves. And if it’s not too windy, consider a walk along the barren basalt cliffs to Ponta de São Lourenço, Madeira’s dramatic easternmost tip, a nature reserve where you can see rare monk seals and take in clear views of Porto Santo, Madeira’s little sister, to the northeast.” – Christine Ajudua in Endless Vacation Magazine. Salty Madeira: Surf trip to Indonesia
Surf trip to Indonesia…
Enjoy some pictures 😉
What to say about the Indonesia surf trip?
I think it all started with a little project call Salty – Madeira Water Activities, a dream of passing to others the joy and the impact that the ocean had in all my life.
Thanks to Salty and everyone that join our Surf, SUP and Bodyboard school… with all of you i could manage to travel on my dream trip to Indonesia!
“It all started with long hours in airoports and planes, Emirates make it feel confortable and fast! Arrived to Jakarta direct to the hotel and I had my very first Bintang with my friend João Mealha.
Next day Padang were we meet the hole crew and the captain Gonçalo Ruivo, i was pumped to start the action on the next day on board of Melaleuca.
It was 11 days surfing here and there all over the dream land Mentawai, surfed lot of waves during the boat trip but one just got to the hole crew as the best of it. We surfed Greenbush all by ourselves. Two hours of overhead waves and good vibes made it the surf of the trip!
Second round was on Lancers Right for 8 days in a 10 steps walk to the water and a 2 minutes paddle to the peak. It was magic!
Surfed HT’S everyday and even got a walk across the rain forest to King Fisher camp on Lancer’s left for a good surf session with Aiken aka Supersonic and Couto. The road there was something out of a Nathional Geografic mag, the local comunity that we met along the road were so simple and beautiful that i felt at home!
On the end 3.30h of boat to catch the fast ferry on another 3h back to Padang. Next day a 37 h trip back to Madeira Island.
It was an amazing trip, surf everyday and made new friends. Gonçalo “the Captain”; João Mealha “Borboleta”; Miguel Fortes; Filipe; Angelo “Supersonic”; Henrique “pescador”; Mouzinho “the coutch”; João Mendonça “boquinha de ouro”; Tomás Couto; Manu “zuca”. Thanks you guys for all, the time and the knowledge that you shared with me!
Special thanks to my girlfriend that make it all possible everyday!

A full day of water activities: Surf and Stand up Paddle in Madeira Island
Surf and Stand up Paddle in Madeira Island with Salty Madeira.
The day started early just like every simple live adicted waterman. Predictions of light wind on the morning and some waves for a fun surf class later on the day i just pack all gear an hit the road to meet with Alexandra and her little Noa in Camara de Lobos.
The plan was simple: pure fun and a good time on the Madeira south coast!
I arrived, took all gear off and they appeared. Little Noa was supper excited to heat the water for the first class of the day, a Stand Up Paddle tour to the water fall and the “cave”.
After 45 minutes paddling with the amazing view of Camara de Lobos and Cabo Girão, we were there ;). Took some time to enjoy all the beauty of these place . Paddle back to Camara de Lobos bay with some light winds to end our morning activity. When we arrived i was impressed, got to remember that Noa is 8 years old and she did it like everyone else.
After everyone ready we went for some lunch! “Just up the hill we have a few good restaurants and when you are with Salty remember that you are no longer a tourist for us you are a part of the family and we always want the best for those that we care. So as always we thake you to the perfect and local places were you can embrace the local comunity.” Espetada with fried corn cubes and some salad”, the perfect traditional dish for a local.
Second round was a surf class in Porto da Cruz in the North East of Madeira Island, but this time we had the company of another two members of the family Chico an Gui join us for the surfing session.
Meeting point in the Alagoa Beach Restaurant. Some waves with some wind but perfect for another two hours in the water.
We got the gear up and went in to ride some good waves and it was amazing. Alexandra and Noa were riding wave after wave and the time pass by Noa hit the beach to play with Chico and Gui and Alexandra got a few more waves. After it was time for Chico to do one wave!
After this amazing day we went to the Alagoa Beach Restaurant for the Madeira famous and our favourite fisherman style poncha. A local drink made from sugar cane rum lemon peale and some sugar. Perfect end of the day in a good company 🙂
Thank you Alexandra and Noa for the time that you spended with us! It was a pleasure to meet you and don’f forget: Keep it Salty!

Surf in Madeira Island
… what a day of surfing. Before I speak of this day, I must perhaps say how my previous day ended. Good waves in a memorable afternoon. Two hours of good surf in good company, a poncha to finish the day with the sun going down and a forecast of good waves for the next day.
Morning Surfing
I woke up at 06:30 in the morning to go surfing again to the same spot that i had surfed the day before. Full of will and anxiety to get there and know the true verdict of the conditions of the waves. With the sun still to rise and conditions not perfect but more than acceptable for a good session of surf, light wind and waves of 1.5m. 4 people inside the water and good barrels! It was a good 2.30 hours of surf. The tide was changing and i changed also the surf spot. The north coast of the island was going to be more or less with the same conditions but instead of right waves to surf i surfed some nice lefts. Sun, good waves and lots of fun on the mix for the 3 hours surfing.
Madeira Island has the conditions to provide good experiences for all levels of surf, from the beginners to the pros. It is very important to surf together and that is where Salty comes in, we have classes for beginners to surf guide for pros. If you want to surf in Madeira Island and have fun book your surfing experience with Salty – Madeira Water Activities.

Stand up Paddle tour in Madeira Island – Testimonial
Stand up Paddle Tours in Madeira Islands – Testimonial
We feel happy to share with you a testimonial from our “clients” now our friends Peter an Simone about their experience during a stand up paddle tour in the bay of the Câmara de Lobos in Madeira Island.
Join our SUP classes in our Stand Up Paddle School by Salty – Madeira Water Activities.
“In the Realm of the Senses
First! Think about your Job, Stress, Emails, rainy and cold weather and what ever you do at home.
And then…., can you remember your last trip to Madeira, when the airplane arrives Funchal Airport, through the doors reaches you warm and tropical air, 27 degrees, the darkblue ocean is in front of you, the sun burns down. Can you remember this time??? Can you feel now this Paradies?
We can, our last trip was in September this year, one of now over 10 stays at this wonderful island. This year we had the wish to spend more time at the water, first time on a board, on a SuP Board. Hey and everybody of our friends says us before: “You are to old, you are freaky, you are crazy, in your age is SuP not the sport which you should prefere”.
But my wife and I has our own idea for that. Claudia, the owner of Lobosonda gave us the contact of Belmiro from Salty.
2 days later: What a day! We met a couple with a lot of inspired ideas, we spent an amazing time on the boards. Remember: you are on the board, sunny weather, small waves outside and two teachers with a burning fire in their eyes.
Belmiro and Sara have such a lot of passion in their job, so we think this was the best idea which we had in our holidays.
Go out surfing, go out with the SuP Board, dive with the fishes or go out with a Bodyboard, but do it with Salty, do it with Belmiro Mendes and Sara Abreu.
Have fun after the tour and drink Poncha, Fishermen Poncha, not the Tourist Poncha with Honey! It must be the pure one!
And I’m sure, when we back next year, we will spend once more a lot of time with Salty.
Let’s get Salty! “Stand up Paddle Tours in Madeira Islands – Testimonial”
